I agree. I would rank this one up with The Poisonwood Bible.

I also loved this book as I enjoy learning about other cultures , relationships and histories. The Kite Runner is equally thought- provoking and has become one of my all-time favourites.

This novel is a fantastic read. It mainly follows the life of one woman, Mariam, who, as an illegitimate child, is forced into a marriage to save her father from the public embarrassment of having fathered a child out of wedlock.
As the novel begins I got the impression that Mariam was a strong single minded child, who would stick up for herself, however it soon emerges that her spirit is to b...
Show alle gradually eroded away, when she moves into the oppressive household of her new husband, Rasheed.
What then follows is a sad tale of a woman being oppressed by her husband, her dreams turning to nothing, and a life of servitude and misery. At the same time the novel follows the political turmoil of Afghanistan, the fractious politics, and the resulting limiting of womens rights as the Taliban come to power in Kabul and enforce their strict Islamic laws.
The novel was a real awakening to me about the different cultures that exist in the world today, and the vast difference of experiences between humans living under different political regimes.
As the novel continues, a new woman, Laila, moves into the household, she is a beautiful young girl and Rasheed soon marries her. The effect on Mariam is not one of relief that her grotesque husband's lascivious desires will be redirected elsewhere, but instead she feels betrayed and used.
It is such a heart rendering story to see how low someone's life can sink. However when Mariam gathers the strength to kill her abusive husband, she is finally set free from his mental and physical abuse.
It is an extremely sad novel, and very thought provoking. A Thousand Splendid Suns has made me really want to learn more about Afghanistan and its turbulent history. I shall definitely be reading The Kite Runner, also by the same author.
