I haven't studied this book at school either and started reading it as a recommendation from a friend.
Yes I definitely saw parallels with Lennie and the central character in The Green Mile - that in both novels the central characters have great physical strength and are misunderstood by those around them.
I don't know how other people feel, but I couldn't sypathise with Lennie after he co...
Show allmmits the murder towards the end. Yes he didn't realise what was happening, and perhaps didn't intend to kill Curley's wife, however he nevertheless commits the crime. Despite knowing that Lennie could not have known what he was doing was wrong (due to his mental incapacity) it was the aggressiveness of the act which stopped me feeling any pity for Lennie and his subsequent death.
The ending is very sad, but I think George didn't feel he had any choice but to, in effect, put Lennie down (mirroring a scene earlier in the novel where an old and lame dog is taken out to be shot - the same gun being used to shoot Lennie), I thought it impossible to tell George's exact reasons for doing so, perhaps he felt Lennie had already had one too many chances, was too much of a burden on him, or through his love for Lennie didn't want the mob that was chasing him to rip him to pieces. However my own interpretation is that George was worried about a repeat of the incident and in some way wants to protect people in the future from Lennie's potential actions.
Lennie is described as being bear like throughout the novel, with hands like 'paws' and it is almost ironic that, like with a bear that is untamed and has gone out of control, has to be put down, so too does Lennie.

I have just finished reading this book and found a really good read. I have not studied it at school or seen any study guides for the novel, so would be interested to hear peoples thoughts.
I did think the novel was very similar to The Green Mile and wondered if The Green Mile was based on it?
It became obvious as the novel went on that Lenny had murdered previously and George was aware of...
Show all this. Possibly giving him another chance? Do you think George felt relieved once Lenny was gone as a burden was lifted?
I'm interested to hear your thoughts.
