Membership
I'm new to the site, how do I use it?
In order to post comments, add friends, and enjoy the full interactivity of the site you will need to sign up. Signing up is free and will take no more than 30 seconds. The registration link can be found at the top of each page, as a link on the log-in box, or by clicking the 'join us' button that can be found on the right, mid-way down each page. Or click here.
Once you have filled in the registration form, and clicked 'register', you will receive a confirmation email at the email address you have just provided. Simply click the link in the confirmation email to become a fully signed up member.
Once signed up
Logging in: first of all, you need to log in to your account from the log-in box that can be found at the top of each page. To log-in, enter your user name and password, and then click the "log in" button.
Protecting your personal information
We are dedicated to ensuring that no one mishandles your personal information, the site is fully encrypted when you sign up, also we will not divulge your email address to any third parties. We are signed up to the Information Commissioner Office's official register as registered data controllers and are bound to comply with all UK Data Protection laws.
Searching and commenting on books
Searching for a book
Simply enter the book title or author you are looking for in the search box, located on the right of every page. Once you have clicked search, if any comments have previously been made on the book, this information will be displayed, with a bright blue border around the book. If there have been no comments on the book searched for, a long list of titles will appear, select the book you wish to comment on by clicking the book cover. This will take you to the forum for that book, then simply write your comment in the space provided, and click 'post comment'.
Commenting on a book
As detailed above, once you have clicked the book you wish to comment on, you will be directed to a forum for that specific book. Write your comment in the space provided; click 'post comment' and the comment will automatically be posted alongside the book.
Editing book comments
At present there is no facility for members to edit comments they have previously made, however if you wish to edit/ resubmit a comment, contact us here, with the name of the book, your username, and the edit you wish to make, and we will amend the comment for you.
Why can't I post a comment?
Only members can post comments. To join the site, simply follow the registration process detailed above, and within 30 seconds you will be able to begin posting comments.
I joined but couldn't log-in or post comments
The most likely reason is that you have not confirmed your email address during the initial sign up process. In order to confirm, either look through your emails for the confirmation email, or contact us here or at support@bookrants.com and we will resend the confirmation link to your email address so you can activate your account.
Editing details
How can I change my user name?
Unfortunately, it is not possible to change your user name. Once you have registered, your user name becomes permanent and cannot be altered.
How do I update my e-mail address?
Log-in, then click 'profile' (located in the log-in box) > 'Edit profile' then simply enter your desired change of email address and click the 'change' button to update.
How do I change my password?
Log-in, then click 'profile' (located in the log-in box) > 'Change password' then follow the instructions on the change password page: enter old password, new password, and confirmation of new password > then click the 'Change' button.
How do I change my profile picture?
On registration you will automatically be assigned a default image. To change this: Log-in, then click 'profile' (located in the log-in box) > 'Change picture'. Then either choose one of the other default images, or upload your own. To upload your own picture: Click browse > choose the picture you wish to upload > then click 'upload'.
How do I edit the personal information on my profile page?
Log-in, then click 'profile' (located in the log-in box) > 'Edit profile' then simply enter, or delete the information as you wish. Then click the 'change' button to update.
Forgotten password?
Simply click the 'forgotten' button on the log-in box (that can be found at the top of each page), this will take you to a page where you can enter your email address, click 'remind me', and your password will instantly be sent to your email address.
How do I close my account?
Send a message to us using this form detailing the reason why you wish to close your account, and we will do so within 2 working days.
Interacting with other members
How do I interact with other members?
Simply click on the member's profile picture, this will allow you to access their profile page. From there you can view their friends, their recent comments, and all the books they have reviewed so far.
Additionally on their profile page you will see links to add the member as a friend and a link to send them a private message.
Messaging
Inbox
Upon logging in to your account, look to the log-in box at the top of the page, this will detect whether you have any new messages. To view any messages you have in your inbox, click the 'messages' link in the log-in box. From here you will be able to view all messages sent to you.
Sent messages
To view messages you have sent to other members simply click the 'messages' link in the log-in box, then click the 'Go to outbox' link.
